Virtual office guide
How to change your registered office address
Moving your company's official address, step by step.
Choose a new address you're allowed to use, then tell Companies House, online or on form AD01. The new address becomes your registered office once Companies House registers it. After that, update your website, letters and invoices, and tell the organisations that write to you.

Before you start: choose an address you can use
Your new registered office has to meet the same rules as the old one:
- An appropriate address. Post sent to the company would come to someone acting on its behalf, and it could be acknowledged.
- Not a PO box. It has to be a physical address.
- In the same part of the UK. A company registered in England and Wales can move anywhere in England or Wales, but not to Scotland or Northern Ireland.
- You have permission to use it. If it's a virtual office in Liverpool or anywhere else, that means your agreement with the provider, and their AML checks done first.
How to change your registered office, step by step
- Get the new address confirmed. Agree it with the owner or provider. If you're moving to a virtual office, finish their ID checks and wait until they confirm your address is live.
- Tell Companies House. File the change online, or send form AD01 by post. To file online you'll need to sign in and use your company's authentication code.
- Wait for it to be registered. The new address becomes your registered office when Companies House registers the change. For 14 days after that, documents can still be validly delivered to the old address, so keep an eye on post there.
- Update your own details. Your registered office has to appear on your website, business letters and order forms, so change them as soon as the new address is registered.
- Tell everyone who writes to you. HMRC, your bank, insurers, suppliers, customers, and any regulator or licensing body. Don't assume a change at Companies House reaches all of them.
Gov.uk has the current online service and form AD01. Search for "change a company's registered office address" on gov.uk.
Changing your director's service address at the same time
Your registered office belongs to the company. Your director's service address belongs to you, and it's changed separately. If you set the company up from home, your home is probably in both places on the public register.
Moving both at once keeps your home off new filings completely. At the Maggie O'Neill Centre, Director's Cover gives you a director's service address for £10 a month, on top of your registered office. Our guide on keeping your home address off Companies House explains both changes.
